1. The value of PI
The value of PI can be easily calculated now with the help of a digital computer or calculator, but earlier it had to be done manually and it was not a very easy task! A German mathematician spent his entire life calculating the first 35 decimal places of PI.
2. Is equal to
The ‘is equal to’ sign was invented in the 16th century by a Welsh mathematician who as fed up of using the term ‘is equal to’ in his equations.
3. The absence of 0 from Roman Number system
Zero is the only number which cannot be represented in the Roman Number system. The Romans never used numbers to do any maths calculations and hence never used zero.
4. India’s invention
The number system that we use now, that is, 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 ,8, 9 is the most widely used representation of the number system. This numerical system is also known as the Hindu-Arabic numerals originally came from India itself! In fact, the number 0 also originated from India.
5. PI or pie
The mathematical value of pi is 3.14 which, if read backwards, spells pie.
6. The birthday problem!
According to the Maths birthday problem, in a room full of 23 people there is a 50% chance that two people share the same birthday! Also, in a room of 75 people the chances that two people share the same birthday is 99%.
7. The number 7
The number 7 has a lot of unique attributes!
According to a study, most people believe 7 to be their most favourite number.
7 holds a lot of significance in the nature:- There are 7 days in a week, 7 colours in a rainbow, 7 wonders of the world, 7 levels of hell, 7 continents on earth, 7 seas and even this fact is on number 7… LOL
8. The origin of 60 seconds
The people in ancient Babylon, Mesopotamia, did Maths in base 60 as opposed to base 10. The division of hour into 60 minutes and 60 seconds come from them as they did their mathematical calculations in the base 60. This is the reason we have 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 360 degrees in a circle!
9. P I Z Z A
A pizza which has a radius Z and height A will have a volume equal to P I Z Z A. This is because volume of cylinder is equal to piradiusradius*height!
10. The longest Proof
The longest mathematical proof to exist in the world is actually 15000 pages long. It took 100 mathematicians and 30 years to derive that proof!
